Centre for Children in Crisis started and registered in 2003 as a charity because of the impact HIV/AIDS pandemic has on the social and economic fabric of our nation, Nigeria and our continent, Africa. The problem is far beyond what the government alone can cope with. HIV/AIDS has already orphaned a whole generation of children. If the situation is not addressed with increased urgency, millions of children will continue to die, and millions more will be further marginalised, stigmatised, malnourished, left uneducated, psychologically and emotionally damaged.
AIDS Orphans suffer recurrent psychological trauma, starting with the illness and deaths of their parents. Majority have to drop out of school to attend to ill family members, work or beg for alms to look after young siblings. Other orphans rely on ageing and often impoverished grandparents. Where there are no grandparents, older children are often left to care for their younger brothers and sisters. The distress and social isolation experienced by these children, both before and after the death of their parent(s), is compounded by the stigma of shame, fear, and rejection that often surrounds people affected by HIV and AIDS. After a thorough research, CENCHIC came up with a plan of action to create awareness to prevent new HIV infections. We have produced well researched educational materials, which will make the unfamiliar issues of HIV/AIDS very simple for the children to understand. Apart from community mobilization and outreach for the promotion of AIDS awareness and counseling, we are currently providing 211 children and their family with psychosocial, health, economic, educational support as well as the provision of wholesome meals every week.
We realized that majority of the orphans we are sponsoring in schools can not cope with the regular schools, so they dropped out. The only solution to this is a specialised school and care which are not readily available in their present locality. This necessitates the need to start a school that will provide secondary, vocational and life empowerment education needs of orphans and vulnerable children in Nigeria and Africa. Kindly support us through donation, partnership or sponsorship of our educational scheme. You can also sponsor a child of your choice.
